An Award Winning Author Visits Room 6

We were so lucky yesterday to have Anne Marie Florian visit our class.  Anne Marie owns Storytime in town but she is also an author. She wrote Kiwi - a New Zealand Post Best Picture book nominee.  She read Kiwi to the class.  The children asked her some questions:

How long does it take to write a book? (Olivia)
Well it takes a very long time.  You do some writing and then you put it away.  You do lots of thinking and then you bring the book out again.  You change things you don't like.  For example you might change one word for a better word.

Do you have any friends that are authors?  Lysander
Yes I do.  We do lots of taking together and sharing our ideas.  We ask each other about how things are going or for advice.

How do you write books?  Thane
Well you do lots and lots of research.  You read other books and sometimes things on the internet.  You write and edit and rewrite lots of times until you are happy with your writing. You work together with other people to help do the pictures for your book (illustrator) and sometimes you have to work with experts as part of your research like I had to for my Kiwi book.

What did you know about Kiwi? George
Well not very much but I asked one of the Doc Kiwi Rangers for help.  I went around with him and watched what he did and asked him lots and lots of questions.

Here are some photos of Anne Marie reading her book to room 6 and a video.
