Super Science Friday

We repeated last weeks experiment with the candles and discussed why we couldn't blow out the candle with the square container in front but we could with the round container in front.  We found out that moving air can travel more easily around round shaped objects than square ones.  We talked about wind direction, sheltering from wind and how the shapes of things can be used to help air move or stop air from moving.

Then Mrs Hayman asked us how wind starts.  Some of us thought
the wind starts because the earth spins.
the wind starts when the trees move
the wind starts when people blow air out

We found out that the wind actually starts with the sun.  We looked at the following diagram, discussed it and coloured it in.

It definitely got us thinking.  Why does the strength of the wind change?  Can we catch wind?  Can we use wind?
